Helping you to access funding, like the government’s ECO scheme, is one of the many things we can do for you at Effective Home. But what is the ECO scheme? Who qualifies for ECO funding? And what can you get from it? Keep reading to find out all the answers to these questions and more.
What is the Government’s ECO Scheme?
Simply put, The ECO scheme is a government initiative to help tackle fuel poverty and lower carbon emissions across the UK. ECO stands for Energy Company Obligation because Energy Companies are Obligated to provide the necessary funding.
Any energy supplier with over 150,000 customers is required to take part. They each have a target of energy efficiency measures to install, including insulation and boiler upgrades. The funding helps thousands of households each year who wouldn’t be able to afford these measures themselves.
The scheme started in 2013 and has been amended a couple of times. We’re currently in ECO3, which is set to end in April 2022 when ECO4 takes over. Watch this space to see what changes in ECO4!

Is the ECO Scheme the Same as the Free Boiler Grant?
You may have heard it called the free boiler grant because it is a scheme that helps people get new boilers. However, the scheme can also be used for installing insulation and first-time central heating.
The amount of funding you get also depends on many factors. You may be able to get a boiler completely for free, or you may have to make a small contribution. The subsidised price would still be a lot cheaper than the full cost of a new boiler!
How Can I Get ECO Funding?
The funding itself comes from energy suppliers, but many suppliers manage their ECO work through trusted installers like us. We’ll manage the whole process, from home assessment to installation, and do all the dealing with the energy companies so that you don’t have to.
