      How Do Solar Panels Work?

The sun provides an abundant, clean source of free electricity. Solar cells in solar panels capture photons – tiny packets of electromagnetic energy emitted by the sun. This produces a direct current (DC) of electricity. A solar inverter converts this electric charge into the alternating current (AC) needed to run our homes.

Solar panels in systems with higher power output – such as 8kW setup – produce more free electricity, which saves you more money.

What Is An 8kW Solar System?

The size of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems is measured by the amount of electricity generated at maximum capacity. An eight-kilowatt system produces 8,000 watts – 8kW.

The standard size of solar panel systems for the average UK home is around 3-4kW. Larger houses need to generate more solar power to optimise savings on energy bills. Energy output is measured in kilowatt hours (kWh) – a measurement of energy use by the hour. This is what you see on your electricity bills.

An 8kW solar system produces on average 28-40kWh of electricity a day. This makes it suitable for households of six or more individuals or for small businesses with moderate energy use.

Why Choose An 8kW Solar System?

Larger family homes that use more electricity face higher energy bills than average-size households. Generating free electricity with solar panels lessens your reliance on costly mains electricity. And the less energy you draw from the National Grid, the bigger your savings on energy bills.

The powerful output of an 8kW solar panel system meets the higher energy demands of larger homes, providing power for lighting and multiple common household appliances. It will also run larger applications such as an electric vehicle charger, air conditioning, a heat pump and a pool pump.

Benefits Of An 8kW Solar System

Almost 1.4 million households in the UK currently have solar panel systems, and they enjoy multiple benefits. Larger family homes need higher solar power output to maximise the advantages of going solar.

An 8kW solar energy system minimises the need for mains electricity in homes with up to 10 occupants. This cuts energy costs, reduces carbon footprint, and can increase the value of your property. You can further increase cost savings by selling surplus solar power back to the National Grid.

And your 8kW solar system will last many years, with minimal maintenance, saving you more money long after they’ve paid back your initial investment.

          8kW Solar System Costs

Several factors determine the cost of installing a solar energy system. These include:

          • The type of solar panels.
          • Number of solar panels needed.
          • Complexity of installation.
          • Whether you incorporate a solar battery with the system.

8kW solar systems cost on average around £8,000 to £10,000. This doesn’t include battery storage. Adding a battery to the system costs around £8,000.

          Energy Cost Savings

Solar panels reduce electricity bills by up to 70 percent, according to Energy Saving Trust. Average savings with an 8kW solar system are around £550 a year. You can expect your solar panels to last up to 30 years. So they’ll be making you money long after the payback period of around 11 years. Savings increase if you have a solar battery.

Earning Money With Your 8kW Solar System

Besides cutting electricity costs, you can get paid for solar energy from your 8kW system that you don’t use. You can sell the surplus back to the National Grid through the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). This government-backed scheme requires major energy suppliers to offer SEG payments, and you could make hundreds of pounds a year with an 8kW solar system.

          Making Solar More Affordable

We understand that 8kW solar systems don’t come cheap. We strive to keep costs as low as possible without compromising on quality of materials and workmanship. We also offer solar financing plans so you can spread the cost of your solar panel system to suit your budget. You can pay monthly instalments over five,10 or 15 years.

          Solar Panel System FAQs

The number of rooftop solar panels needed has come down in recent years as their energy efficiency has increased. How much roof space you need for an 8kW solar panel system depends on the size of the panels – the wattage.

If you install panels with a higher wattage, you’ll need fewer of them, which means less roof space is needed. Depending on the wattage of the solar panels you choose, an 8kW system may need around 18 to 21 panels. In terms of roof space, that’s around 45 to 60 square metres.

Bear in mind you can’t cover your entire roof with solar panels. Regulations stipulate you can’t put solar panels closer than 40cm from roof edges.

Solar panels gather energy as long as there’s daylight. They work better on sunny days but will still produce electricity if it’s cloudy or raining.

Your 8kW solar system will work as the weather varies across all four seasons of the year. But it will generate less power in winter, when there are fewer hours of daylight and the sun is lower in the sky.

Rain or less sunlight can in fact be good for solar power output. Rainfall triggers the self-cleaning feature of solar panels and washes away dirt that blocks light. Power output can also be reduced if temperatures soar, causing solar panels to overheat.

In most cases you don’t need planning consent to install rooftop solar panels. It’s classed as a permitted development under planning regulations.

It doesn’t matter that an 8kW solar system requires more panels than the average solar installation in the UK. You will, however, need to apply for planning permission to install solar panels if you live in a conservation area or your house is a listed building.

Your 8kW solar panel system will work perfectly well without battery storage. But adding a battery to the system will maximise its benefits and save you even more money.

Without battery storage, you can only use the electricity your solar panels produce at the time it’s generated – during the hours of daylight. So you have to rely on the National Grid during the evenings, when you use more electricity.

A battery stores solar energy you don’t use during the daytime so you can continue to power your home after sunset. An 8kW solar system typically needs a 31kWh-plus battery.

Effective Home solar batteries are highly efficient. They charge fast and store large amounts of solar energy.

With no value added tax currently on solar panel supply and installation, you can save several hundred pounds on the cost of an 8kW solar system.

The zero rate applies until the end of March 2027. It’s then expected to go back to the original reduced rate of five percent.

As well as saving you money, an 8kW solar panel system will offset your impact on the environment. Traditional methods of generating electricity involve burning fossil fuels, which drives climate change.

Solar systems don’t do this; they harness renewable energy from the sun. This results in a minimal carbon footprint. Only 0.8 kilograms (kg) of CO2 is emitted for each kilowatt hour of solar power produced.

And solar energy production emits no greenhouse gases.

An 8kW solar system can improve your home’s Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating. And eco-conscious homebuyers looking for a large house will be attracted to properties with good green credentials. Research indicates that solar panels can increase home value by up to four percent.

Storing energy from solar panels in a battery results in even lower electricity bills and further reduces carbon footprint. A solar battery will power your home as energy demand peaks during the evening, when your solar panels aren’t producing electricity.

Without battery storage, 60-80 percent of solar energy goes to waste. With a battery, your 8kW solar system can cut electricity bills by up to 90 percent – 20 percent more than solar panels on their own.

A solar battery lasts about half as long as solar panels, so you’ll need to replace your battery at some point during the lifespan of your 8kW solar system. Solar batteries are currently zero-rated for VAT, the same as solar panels.
