What is GBIS?

The Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) is a UK Government funding scheme offering free or cheaper insulation to reduce your home’s energy bills.

If your home’s Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating is between D and G and your Council Tax band is between A and D you could be entitled to fully funded home insulation.

How it works

1. Initial Consultation

Register your interest with an Effective Home representative. This process involves providing the necessary paperwork, having photographs taken of your property, allowing small holes to be drilled into your walls to confirm the presence of an empty cavity.

2. Retrofit Assessment

As part of the process, our surveyor will carry out a full assessment of your home, which can take up to a full day. This includes checking the condition of each room. Together, you'll agree on a ventilation strategy to ensure a healthy indoor environment after the insulation is installed. This may involve a pulse test, where a machine measures ventilation level. The surveyor may also recommend additional measures, such as installing an air box, to improve airflow through windows were needed.

3. Retrofit Co-ordination

A qualified retrofit coordinator will carefully review all the information gathered during the site visit and ensure everything meets the required standards. Once they’ve confirmed that all the measures are suitable for your home, they’ll sign off on the installation so you can rest assured everything has been done to the highest of standards

4. Installation

As part of the process, we’ll install any necessary insulation and ventilation to ensure your home is energy-efficient. This will include an insulation installation visit, which typically takes around half a day, and a mechanical ventilation visit lasting between one to two hours. Once everything is in place, a post-pulse test will be carried out, which usually takes about two hours.

To complement your insulation, here are some of the ventilation options that can enhance your home:

PURGE Natural Ventilation

This relies on features like trickle vents, windows, or air bricks to allow fresh air to enter and circulate. It’s simple and effective in many cases but depends on outdoor conditions.

Mechanical Ventilation (known as Extractor Fans)

Commonly used in areas prone to moisture, like kitchens and bathrooms & utility rooms, extractor fans help prevent condensation by removing excess humidity keeping your property nice and dry.

A device designed to improve indoor air quality by facilitating controlled ventilation in properties with uPVC windows. The Air-Box® Comfort model can be installed without drilling or milling the window profile, preserving the integrity of the window while ensuring compliance with Building Regulations Approved Document Part F and PAS2030: 2019 standards. By allowing fresh air to enter through a controlled mechanism, it helps reduce issues like condensation, mold growth, and indoor air pollutants, thereby promoting a healthier living environment.
