      Why Go Solar?

Solar panels generate free electricity from the sun, an abundant source of clean, green energy. This avoids the need to burn fossil fuels that pollute the environment and emit the greenhouses that drive climate change.

Reducing reliance on expensive electricity from the National Grid also lowers energy bills substantially. A 10-kilowatt (kW) solar panel system is an ideal solution for larger households looking to offset the high cost of using more electricity.

There are plenty of solar solutions available to solve many of your energy problems, check with us today to see how a 10kW system could transform your home.

Why Choose A 10kW Solar System?

If you have a household of six or more individuals, you need a powerful solar system to meet your energy needs. 10kW systems are one of the most powerful residential solar installations – they can even be used to meet the energy demands of small businesses.

Producing more than 40 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity a day, a 10kW solar system can power multiple appliances. This makes larger homes more energy efficient and independent, which means lower electricity bills and reduced carbon footprint.

And your 10kW solar array will continue to provide these benefits for many years, with minimal maintenance. Furthermore, you could also see the value of your home rising. There are countless reasons to switch to a 10kW solar system.

      Optimal Solar Power

The capabilities of a solar panel system depend on factors such as the energy efficiency of your appliances and devices and how much sunlight the solar panels get.

A 10kW solar panel system typically provides larger households with enough power for lighting and a wide range of common household appliances and devices plus larger applications. Unlike smaller solar systems, a 10kW setup can comfortably handle the energy needs of electric vehicle chargers, air conditioning, pool pumps, and heat pumps.

      Lower Energy Bills

The greater power output of a 10kW solar panel system means more savings on energy costs. It can cut electricity bills by more than £1,000 a year. With average installation costs of around £10,000 to £11,000, you can expect your 10kW solar system to pay for itself in about 10 years.

And it can last up to 30 years, so you’ll continue to benefit from significantly reduced electricity bills for around 20 years after payback.

      Selling Your Electricity

In addition to energy cost savings, you could earn money by selling electricity from your 10kW solar system. If you don’t use all the free electricity you generate, you can sell the surplus back to the National Grid through the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG).

Under this government-backed initiative, major energy suppliers are required to offer SEG payments. Find one of the best deals and you could earn hundreds of pounds a year with a 10kW solar setup.

      Zero VAT

The standard rate of value added tax on goods and services is 20 percent. However, the government has reduced VAT on solar panel systems as part of its drive towards net zero carbon emissions.

VAT on solar panel supply and installation is currently zero-rated. This means you can save several hundred pounds on the cost of a 10kW solar system. The zero rate will apply until the end of March 2027, when it’s expected to revert to the original reduced rate of five percent.

      Low Maintenance

Larger solar panel systems, such as a 10kW installation, require minimal maintenance. Solar panels are designed to clean themselves, with dirt and debris being washed away by rainfall. Cleaning the panels manually once or twice a year and an annual professional inspection will further ensure optimal performance and durability, but in terms of maintenance that’s largely it!

      Increased Property Value

Larger properties have recently been driving prices in the housing market to a near-record high.

A 10kW solar system will enhance your property’s green credentials. And larger houses with good Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) ratings are becoming increasingly attractive to homebuyers. Research suggests solar panels can increase property value by up to four percent – around £20,000 for a large house.

10kW Solar System With Battery Storage

Pairing battery storage with a 10kW solar system maximises its benefits. Your electricity bills will be even lower and your carbon footprint further reduced. Solar batteries avoid wasting energy and provide the power your household needs at the times you need it most.

They store excess solar energy generated during the daytime by your solar panels. You can then use this during the evening, when energy demands typically peak. This further reduces reliance on mains electricity and provides additional protection in the event of a power cut. Like solar panels, solar batteries are currently exempt from VAT charges, too.

          Solar Panel System FAQs

Solar cells in solar panels generate a direct current (DC) of electricity by capturing electromagnetic energy from the sun. A solar inverter then turns the DC electricity into an alternating current (AC) compatible with household electrical systems.

The amount of power output of solar panels is measured in watts. Systems with higher wattage – like a 10kW setup – produce more free electricity for your home.

Solar panel systems come in a variety of sizes, from 2kW to 12kW. Solar panels at the higher end of the spectrum generate more power output.

A 10kW system is well suited to large residential properties or small businesses with higher energy demands. It can meet the energy needs of households, businesses, offices and shops that require around 40kWh of electricity a day.

10kW solar energy systems don’t come cheap. However, if you can afford the initial cost, it’s a sound investment. You’ll make significant cost savings year on year by using less electricity from the National Grid, and your solar panels will pay for themselves relatively quickly.

Effective Home offers solar finance plans so you can spread the cost of your 10kW solar system.

The number of solar panels in a 10kW setup depends on panel wattage – how much power the panels produce. The higher the wattage, the fewer panels you need to generate the same output.

Panel options for a 10kW solar system include:

          • 18 x 540W panels.
          • 25 x 400W panels.
          • 34 x 300W panels.
          • 40 x 250W panels.

To install the number of panels required by a 10kW solar system, you’ll need roof space of 47-76 square metres.

Applying for planning consent to install rooftop solar panels isn’t necessary in most cases. It’s considered permitted development under planning regulations.

A 10kW solar energy system needs more solar panels than smaller-size systems but there’s no limit on the number of panels you can install on your roof, apart from available space. However, you can’t completely cover your roof with solar panels. They must be no closer than 40cm from the edge of the roof.

You’ll need planning permission to install solar panels if you live in a listed building or your home is in a conservation area.

Solar batteries don’t last as long as solar panels – typically up to 15 years. This means you may need to replace the batteries at least once during the lifespan of a 10kW solar system.
