In October last year, the UK government launched its much-anticipated Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS). The purpose of this scheme is to help homeowners in England and Wales afford the upfront costs of installing low carbon heating systems which will replace the high number of fossil fuel boilers currently installed within UK properties.
What are low carbon heating systems?
In a race to reduce emissions, the government has set out to reduce the use of gas and oil-fired boilers within domestic and non-domestic properties as part of the 2021 Heat and Buildings Strategy: The government plans to ban the installation of gas boilers in new builds from 2025 and phase out all-natural gas boilers by 2035. If your existing gas boiler breaks down after this time, it would need to be replaced with an alternative low carbon heating system. Currently, 95% of properties in the UK still rely on gas and oil-fired boilers.
Air Source Heat Pumps: are an alternative low carbon method of heating your home and can be installed by our engineers. Instead of using gas or oil an air source heat pump runs on electricity.
If your electricity is generated sustainably, then heat pumps are a great eco-friendly choice as it transfers heat from outside air to water which will heat your rooms via your radiators, hot water taps and underfloor heating.
How much is the heat pump grant?
The grant is set up to help homeowners reach a low carbon heating system and build towards a gas and oil boiler free country. To help achieve this, the government is providing £5,000 towards the installation cost of air source heat pumps.
Am I eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme 2022?
If you are a homeowner, have a valid Energy Performance Certificate and live in England or Wales you could be eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
New build properties are not eligible but if you are in the process of building a new home you could qualify. Do not worry if you have already applied or have received an energy efficiency upgrades such as insulation, and windows. You can still apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
If you have existing low carbon heating systems, you will not be able to qualify for the funding.
